Count independent connections before counting gigabytes
List the supported phones that need their own mobile connection. Two adults might separate for an afternoon, while a tablet is used only beside a parent. Those are different requirements even if the family’s combined data estimate is small.
For a hypothetical seven-day trip, imagine each adult expects to use about 2 GB, with children’s larger downloads saved for suitable Wi-Fi. That gives 4 GB of planned adult usage before a buffer. It is a planning assumption, not a tested consumption rate or a recommendation for every family. Use your own recent activity with our travel data budget guide.
A Portugal example: compare the whole bill
| Setup | Allowance | Validity | Total bill | Per purchased GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One independent phone | 3 GB total | 15 days | €0.74 | €0.25 |
| Two independent phones | 2 × 3 GB; 6 GB combined | 15 days per plan | €1.48 | €0.25 |
| One shared hotspot host | 5 GB shared total | 20 days | €1.02 | €0.20 |
For each displayed allowance, we selected the lowest listed EUR price with at least seven days of validity; equal prices favour longer validity. Prices, coverage and hotspot permission were checked on . Price per GB uses the full purchased allowance, rounded to two decimals. Confirm the current offer in the app before paying.
The €0.74 entry buys one 3 GB total-data plan valid for 15 days. It does not buy 3 GB per day or a family-wide pool. Two purchases provide two separate allowances; unused data on one is not automatically available to the other. The shared option buys one 5 GB total allowance with 20 days of validity on its host line.
The cheaper bill buys a different arrangement
In this example, sharing reduces the initial bill by €0.46. It also reduces combined purchased data from 6 GB to 5 GB and leaves the second phone dependent on the host. This is not a like-for-like comparison of identical service.
If one adult takes the host phone away, the other device loses that shared route to mobile data. Decide how you will handle separate outings, a flat host battery or an unexpected change of plans. A small difference in the bill may matter less than being able to contact each other independently.
Start with the Portugal plan details for this destination. For another country, repeat the calculation using its current offers rather than carrying these prices across the border.
Check hotspot permission and device support
The two selected Stellar offers list tethering as supported when checked. That does not establish the terms for every plan or remove device restrictions. Confirm the exact order’s hotspot conditions and that the host phone can share its mobile data.
Google’s Pixel guidance describes sharing mobile data and advises checking carrier terms. The number of devices, setup options and behaviour vary by phone. Use a hotspot password and connect only the intended devices. Our travel hotspot setup guide covers the practical connection checks without assuming that a single purchase installs the same profile on several phones.
Manage the chosen plans in the app
Choose and buy the appropriate plans in Stellar eSIM, follow each order’s installation instructions and monitor the remaining allowances in the app. If you choose separate plans, keep track of which order belongs to which phone. Check validity for the whole journey, not only the days spent sightseeing.
Before departure, test the intended arrangement at the right activation time and in covered service. Review the activation timing checklist first so that a trial connection does not start a plan earlier than intended.
