Check your home plan before buying another one

Look up France and Switzerland individually in your home carrier’s roaming terms. Switzerland is not included in the EU roaming area. A carrier may nevertheless include it in a particular offer; check the country list and conditions for your own subscription. Do not assume a home plan’s “Europe” label answers the Switzerland question.

Record the actual allowance, any daily pass charge and what triggers it. If your existing plan already covers both countries for the trip, that may be enough. If it covers one but not the other, compare an additional country plan with a regional alternative. Our eSIM versus roaming guide helps you put the two bills next to each other.

A larger area count does not prove the right coverage

In the offers checked for this article, the selected Europe (33 areas) plans include both FR and CH in their supported-country lists. The selected Europe (35 areas) 5 GB offer includes Switzerland but not France. Those counts are names for different coverage lists, not a ranking from narrowest to broadest.

Read the country names on the exact plan you select. This is especially useful when you add a third stop or compare offers with similar names. Open the Europe (33 areas) options and check your complete itinerary again in the app. Country inclusion does not guarantee reception in every building, valley or stretch of road.

These are selected Stellar total-data examples, checked on . For each displayed allowance we selected the lowest listed EUR price with at least seven days of validity; equal prices favour longer validity. This is not a comparison of every provider or every Stellar plan. Price per GB uses the full purchased allowance and is rounded to two decimals. Confirm the current price, coverage and conditions in the app before paying.

Buying the selected 1 GB France example and 1 GB Switzerland example costs €0.67 in total. That gives 2 GB split into two separate country allowances. The regional 3 GB example costs €0.93 and gives one 3 GB pool usable across its included destinations. These are different amounts and arrangements, so the cheaper bill alone does not make them equivalent.

The selected 3 GB country examples cost €1.53 together for 6 GB split between the countries. Compare that with €1.56 for 5 GB in the selected shared regional example. The extra nominal GB in the separate purchases is useful only where you can actually spend it.

Put most of the allowance where most of the trip happens

Imagine a trip using an assumed 0.5 GB in Switzerland and 4 GB in France. That is 4.5 GB total. A 5 GB shared regional allowance could accommodate that allocation, subject to the plan’s conditions, but two separate 3 GB allowances would leave the France part short even though the combined purchase is 6 GB. This is a worked planning example, not a measured travel average.

Separate plans can still make sense when the short leg needs very little data or when their terms suit your route better. Write down expected usage and dates for each country, then allow a buffer. The France options and Switzerland options let you explore other allowance sizes.

Check the selected line near the border

Switzerland’s communications regulator notes that radio signals do not follow national frontiers: a phone near a border can connect to a network on the other side. Treat the country shown in your itinerary and the network actually serving the phone as separate checks.

Before the border leg, select the intended travel data line and review automatic data switching and your home line’s roaming settings. Apply roaming settings only as instructed for the selected travel eSIM. With separate country profiles, identify which line to use at each stop; do not assume leftover data in one plan moves to the other. For calls and account-verification messages, read our guide to keeping your usual number.

Prepare the arrival and return legs too

Keep tickets, accommodation details and the route available offline before departure. Include the airport transfer and the trip back in your coverage and date checks, even if one country is only a brief stop. If you arrive before the main holiday begins, that first supported connection may start the plan’s clock.

The selected offers list validity beginning on the first supported network connection. Follow the instructions for the exact order rather than assuming every offer has the same rule. In Stellar eSIM, choose and buy the plan, check the country list and monitor remaining data during the trip. After arrival, a small mobile-data test with Wi-Fi briefly off helps confirm which connection is working; avoid a large speed test that uses data you intended to save.
